SIMS depth profile analysis of WC-Co composite used in wood materials machining after nitrogen ion implantation
Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, Forestry and Wood Technology 2018, 104, 400-424
Tungsten carbide is a particularly hard material that is chosen for cutting tools that need to be resilient to wear with a long working life. It can be enhanced further by adding nitrogen to the surface using ion implantation. Secondary Ion mass Spectrometry (SIMS) measurements using the SIMS Workstation, have been made to determine the position and concentration of the nitrogen ions in commercial wood-cutting tools. The ability to determine the nitrogen profile is necessary to optimise the performance of the WC and maintain quality in the finished product.
