It can be enhanced further by adding nitrogen to the surface using ion implantation. Secondary Ion mass Spectrometry (SIMS) measurements using the SIMS Workstation, have been made to determine the position and concentration of the nitrogen ions in commercial wood-cutting tools. The ability to determine the nitrogen profile is necessary to optimise the performance of the WC and maintain quality in the finished product.
