Houlder has been contracted to assist TidalStream in the design development of their Triton platform – a tidal energy device confirmed by independent cost modelling to halve the cost of harvesting marine energy. In undertaking Development Engineering for the UK innovators, Houlder will draw on its experience of supplying complex, bespoke equipment to its Oil & Gas clients – where it is typically responsible for all design and engineering provision from initial concept through to deployment TidalStream’s Triton platform design (pictured) can provide up to 10MW of turbine capacity from a single seabed foundation. Further efficiencies are made through float-out installation and removal – negating the need for heavy lift cranes and barges - and on-board access for maintenance. The platform can support a wide range of turbines from third party suppliers and utilise straightforward gravity base, pinned located or single pile foundations. This is because the Triton’s single swing arm design replaces with shear forces the large overturning moments traditionally associated with tidal deployments.
