Health and Safety Obligations

IWM aimed to clarify the health and safety aspects of its business. Often, these challenges are perceived as bureaucratic hurdles rather than measures to keep people safe. Moreover, health and safety obligations and plans vary among companies, depending on factors like industry, company size, business structure, and environment.

To meet both legal and moral obligations, IWM sought to establish a comprehensive health and safety framework. This included a written Health and Safety Policy and ongoing risk assessments that could be regularly reviewed and updated.

Risk Mitigation | Identifying Health and Safety Obligations

Prevention is better than cure. Identifying and mitigating risks is more effective and cost-efficient than dealing with workplace accidents afterward. IWM implemented risk assessment procedures to identify potential hazards, involving staff in the process to ensure all risks were recognised.

Common risks, such as forklifts operating in pedestrian areas, were addressed by creating separate walkways to prevent collisions. Additionally, noise levels from heavy machinery were measured, leading to the implementation of controls like ear defenders and guards to reduce risks.

Risks were evaluated, recorded, and appropriate controls were established. Risk assessments were distributed, made readily available, and scheduled for regular reviews or updates as necessary. Individual responsibility for maintaining a safe work environment was emphasized, alongside teamwork.

IWM documented identified risks and preventive measures, excluding everyday hazards that are assumed. The Health and Safety Executive acknowledges that not all risks can be eliminated, but reasonable steps should be taken where possible.

Continuous Risk and Safety Management

IWM established procedures to continuously monitor processes, ensuring that measures remain effective and documenting any amendments or improvements. Staying informed about changes in government guidance was prioritised for implementation.

Employee Engagement | Upholding the Health and Safety Policy

Effective communication with employees was crucial for IWM. Consulting them and keeping them informed about the health and safety policy helped foster buy-in and understanding of its purpose. Training sessions, documentation, and toolbox talks were conducted to ensure clarity and compliance. Consideration was given to including a clause in employment contracts stating that breaches of health and safety obligations could result in disciplinary action.

IWM is actively working on environmental changes to enhance facilities, focusing on aspects like cleaning, space, and ventilation to ensure optimal safety and hygiene standards.
