In our latest 90 Second Insight video we take a look at our Roller Barrier anti climb system and how it provides totally safe anti climb protection.
Many anti-climb security solutions involve the use of spiked anti climb barriers that present an intimidating hurdle that’s intended to deter climbers. But in many situations the use of spiked anti climb barriers is far from ideal. If someone attempts to overcome the spiked barrier there is always the possibility they will harm themselves and the aggressive visual appearance of anti climb spikes is not always welcome. What’s needed is an effective anti climb barrier that can’t be climbed over, will not harm anyone if they attempt to do so - and looks great.
What is Roller Barrier?
Roller Barrier, designed and developed by Insight Security, provides exactly what’s needed. This simple system uses loosely rotating, side-by-side, rugged plastic cups that are too large to be gripped by hand. The cups are mounted on robust poles, secured to the structure, fence or wall, wherever anti-climb protection is needed. If anyone attempts to climb over the unstable, rotating cups the barrier makes it impossible.
Where Roller Barrier is Used
Roller Barrier is installed at a wide variety of properties all around the world. Many of these installations have now been in place for a number of years, providing reliable, maintenance-free anti climb protection.
There are numerous situations in which its essential to understand that people, especially children, may not recognise the danger they can face if they attempt to climb a particular structure. Roller Barrier fulfils the legal obligation to exercise a clear duty of care to protect people from harm while safely preventing them from climbing where they shouldn’t.
Anti Climb Protection for Educational Establishments
Schools, colleges and other educational establishments, of all sizes, have a clear need to prevent energetic, adventurous youngsters from climbing where they aren’t supposed to. Flat rooftops, for example, can often be an almost irresistible attraction to children. And school premises are sometimes revisited, out of hours, by troublesome youngsters, out to cause mischief.
Roller Barrier has now been widely deployed in and around many schools and educational settings where it keeps unwanted intruders at bay and prevents naughty youngsters from climbing where they are not allowed.
Settings for the Neurodiverse
Impulsive, neurodivergent adults and children may not recognise how dangerous it can be to climb various structures, walls and fences. This is why many psychiatric hospitals and establishments, that help people with special needs, are now extensively using Roller Barrier to keep those people safe and secure.
Not only does Roller Barrier prevent climbing it also doesn’t look aggressive, which is an important attribute in these settings. Private homes, where there may be a need to protect a fearless member of the household from harming themselves, have also successfully deployed Roller Barrier, without making the home look like a fortress.
Prisons and Young Offender Institutions
Prisoners and young offenders need to be prevented from climbing various structures while at the same time protected from harm if they attempt to do so. Many prisons and young offender properties, especially older buildings, are full of ledges, ridges and sills that can attract unwanted climbing attention. If an inmate manages to climb onto one of these structures it may be necessary to call in external specialists to safely get them down. This can be costly, time consuming and diverts valuable resources.
Considerately deployed Roller Barrier is providing anti climb protection to these areas, alleviating prison staff from the concern that someone might harm themselves by climbing where they shouldn’t.
Protection Against Parkour Enthusiasts
Parkour or ‘freerunning’ has grown in popularity over recent years. Enthusiasts are always on the lookout for new locations and structures where they can test their skills. Sadly, their enthusiasm can draw them to locations where they put themselves at risk and sometimes cause unwelcome damage.
The rooftops of office buildings and commercial premises are a favoured target for these adventurous daredevils. Not only do they put themselves at risk by climbing up there, they are also known to have caused significant roof damage. Their activities have torn and punctured roof coverings, allowing rainwater to penetrate into buildings where the water ingress has been enormously detrimental and costly.
Roller Barrier has been successfully deployed to protect these rooftop areas from unwanted freerunners.
Public Buildings
Public buildings, such as community centres and libraries, often attract unwanted climbing attention from youths and others. These buildings typically have flat rooftops which can be very appealing to adventurous youngsters who want to test their climbing skills and show off to their friends. Roller Barrier, installed along the roofline, effectively and safely prevents people from climbing onto these rooftops where they might otherwise harm themselves, damage the roof or even fall off.
Railway Safety Enhancement
Railway lines that pass through populated areas are generally protected by safety fencing, to prevent people from putting themselves at risk on the tracks. But this fencing is seen by some as a challenge and not an effective barrier.
Roller Barrier has been successfully installed to safely increase the height of this valuable trackside safety fencing, without risk of harming someone if they attempt to climb over.
Double row Roller barrier has also been used at railway stations to safely prevent people from scaling fences and bypassing ticket verification checks.
Double Row and Trigard Roller Barrier
While most Roller Barrier installations involve a single row of rotating Roller Barrier cups, this innovative anti climb barrier is also available in double row and triple row formats.
Double row Roller Barrier is particularly suitable for areas that need higher security protection. Its also very useful for situations where the barrier height needs to be safely increased. In some installations, cranked support brackets have been used to present the anti climb barrier at an angle, providing greater anti climb security.
Triple row or Trigard Roller Barrier is another variant. Three parallel rows of rotating Roller Barrier cups present a formidable anti climb obstacle. This format is particularly useful for anti-climb prevention on lower level surfaces and walls. These lower level structures will often attract unwanted climbers who might injure themselves if they fall off. And being at at a lower level, spiked anti climb protection would be totally out of the question. Trigard Roller Barrier is also great for preventing people from climbing onto external equipment such as fan protection housings and air conditioning systems.
