Designed to provide robust security for valuable two-wheeled assets such as e-bikes, we are proud to announce the availability of the latest additions to the Squire Stronghold cycle range from our online store. Read on to learn more.
The use of e-bikes in the UK is exploding. The overall market was valued at around £0.2 billion in 2021 and is anticipated to reach around £0.4 billion by 2027. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a massive increase in demand for e-bikes and ongoing support and incentives from central government is expected to further boost e-bike adoption.
But e-bikes are an expensive purchase with even budget models costing in excess of £1000. At the time of writing, the most expensive electric bike is the the Blacktail BT-001. Constructed from carbon fibre, lightweight aerospace aluminium, titanium and magnesium, this exceptional two-wheeler is priced at a staggering $80,000.
The recent boom in the use of valuable electric bikes has prompted British security manufacturer Squire to launch its toughest ever Stronghold range of cycle security solutions. Designed specifically for e-bikes and other forms of high-end two-wheeled transport the new range includes the D16/230 D-lock, the IC/850 integrated lock and chain set along with the FL/850 folding lock.
Squire Stronghold D16/230 D-Lock
The new Squire Stronghold D16/230 is a familiar D-lock design, but this super-secure lock has achieved Sold Secure Bicycle Diamond accreditation along with Sold Secure Motorcycle Gold. To learn more about Sold Secure ratings and what they mean please take a look at our Sold Secure Ratings Guide.
You’ll see that the Sold Secure Diamond rating is the highest attainable level of security for bicycle locks which means this D-lock has withstood prolonged, arduous attacks using a range of tools and techniques known to be used by organised e-bike thieves.
This D-lock weighs in at 2.26kg and features a super-tough 16mm hardened boron steel shackle. The D-lock body is also made from hardened steel and uses a 6-pin cylinder that has over 500,000 key differs which means there’s no chance anyone will have the same key.
Supplied with two keys, the restricted key system means that only those with the required authorisation can have keys cut and this can only be carried out by an authorised locksmith. A personal key-card system is used for owner authorisation. This British-made e-bike D-lock has the highest possible Squire security rating of 10+ and comes with a lengthy 10-year guarantee, demonstrating the manufacturer's confidence in this robust e-bike security solution.
Squire Stronghold IC/850 Integrated Lock and Chain Set
The new Squire Stronghold IC/850 Integrated Lock and Chain Set has also achieved Sold Secure Bicycle Diamond and Sold Secure Motorcycle Gold ratings. The integrated 850mm chain is made from 10mm square hardened alloy steel and the lock body is also made from robust hardened steel.
This lock and chain set weigh in at 2.04kg making this an ideal choice for a high-security carry-with-you security system. The 6 pin lock cylinder has over 500,000 key differs and comes with a set of 2 restricted keys. A personal key card security system ensures only the authorised lock owner is able to get additional keys from authorised locksmiths.
The specially designed padlock is permanently attached to one end of the square profile chain for security and convenience. This is another excellent British-made lock that’s achieved the highest possible Squire security rating of 10+ and comes with an extensive 10-year manufacturer's guarantee.
Squire Stronghold FL/850 Folding Lock
The all-new Squire FL/850 Folding Lock is a compact folding lock that combines functional convenience with super-tough performance. This exceptional security solution has achieved both Sold Secure Bicycle Gold and Secured by Design approvals.
Weighing in at 3.26kg this lock features 5mm thick, hardened boron steel plates that form the folding chain and comes with a compact holster and carrying bracket for portable convenience. Like other Stronghold locks in this series, this one features a 6-pin cylinder with over 500,000 differs, a restricted key system and personal key card to prevent unauthorised copying of keys. It can be neatly packed into its holster, safely secured to the bike frame with a strap.
Invest in Bike Security
We’ve previously highlighted warnings from police forces and others about how the cost of living crisis is driving an increase in serious acquisitive crime. The popularity of e-bikes, along with their high value, makes them an attractive target for opportunistic criminals.
The tactics they use have become increasingly sophisticated, sometimes involving the use of vans and flatbed trucks to make quick getaways with stolen bikes, scooters and motorbikes. And the availability of powerful, battery operated power-tools means security solutions must withstand these forms of attack.
Sold Secure product testing laboratories know about all of the techniques used by bike and motorcycle thieves. From freezer sprays and sledgehammers to angle grinders and drills, their test procedures subject security products to every possible form of attack to assess exactly how much protection they provide.
While this latest generation of two-wheeled security products may appear to be expensive this needs to be considered alongside the value of the assets being secured.
A good rule of thumb is to be prepared to spend around 10% of value of your bike or motorbike on security. And when considering the value of your two-wheeled transport it's important to consider the impact its loss would have on your life as well as any additions that may have been installed.
