Could you tell the difference between a professional metal detector and a rip-off copy?
Professional hand held security metal detectors are standard issue to the police and military and have recently become an essential security tool for schools and businesses throughout the UK as well as being used extensively by nightclubs, etc.
With a wide range of models to choose from, you may need help to choose the right model for your needs, especially as there are currently many far eastern inferior copies of professional units (such as those produced by quality manufacturers such as Garrett, etc) being sold in the UK.
Naturally some units perform much better than others and this is one area of security where an inferior unit that works some of the time is DEFINITELY NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT!
Lets address one of the obvious potential pitfalls first;
A quality unit from a respected manufacturer with a reputation to protect, will generally nowadays feature high performance digital technology rather than the old analogue type, incorporate high quality components and circuitry to ensure long operational life and low battery drain in use - in short you are guaranteed quality performance, long operational life (even in hostile environments) and low running costs.
Rip off copies on the other hand, invariably utilise older analogue technology, inferior internal components and cheaper, less robust outer casings. Typically therefore, even though the initial purchase price may look attractive, ...poor performance, early component failure and high running costs (i.e. replacement batteries) frequently result in a higher long term cost of ownership than had you invested in a quality unit in the first place! - Be warned however, some of the rip-off copies are increasingly difficult to spot - even we were almost fooled by a clever copy of a Garret Superscanner hand held detector, which featured a valid Garrett serial number and even had the name spelled correctly!
So what type of metal detector would be best for you?
Well, to answer this we need to establish how and where you intend to use it;
...if you have lots of people to scan quickly for instance, you will probably need a walkthrough arch type metal detector (often referred to as a knife arch), similar to those commonly used at airports.
...if volume of persons to scan is not an issue, a hand held wand type metal detector will offer a cheaper alternative.
...a general purpose hand held metal detector unit should be more than capable of instantly detecting large metal masses such as knives or guns carried on a person, whilst a high performance detector will be required to detect small objects ingested within a body for instance.
Whatever your needs, we strongly recommend that you buy from a reliable suppler with a reputation to protect. They will be able to offer you practical advice and guide you to the best product for your needs.
