The size of the headline doesn't always match the detail of the story...
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith this week reiterated her statement that getting guns off our streets is a major government priority, and was quick to praise the joint police and special task force operation which within the last few days, lead to the headline "1,300 Guns Seized in 1 Day of Raids", a news story aired on national UK news and also in the printed press.
Given the current levels of gun crime in the UK, and the generally accepted; easy availability of guns to criminals and youth gangs, such a headline should bring us to our feet cheering,
...especially when this success was the result of a carefully planned, major joint exercise between the Police, HM Revenue and Customs, and The Serious Organised Crime Agency,
...involving some 1,000 Officers
...setting up road blocks around the country
...raiding some 67 premises
...leading to 118 arrests
...and the seizure of 34 vehicles
...but the detail doesn't quite seem to match the headline
On careful study of the seizures however, it would appear that
...10 of the guns were actually firearms,
... 4 were air rifles
...and the remaining items were replica guns of one form or another
Whilst we have every respect for the law enforcement agencies tackling this serious and difficult issue, and also acknowledge that many replica weapons can be converted to fire live ammunition, on the face of it the given the massive cost and effort involved in these raids, the number of real weapons removed from circulation is frankly disappointing.
