If your padlock is all gunged up and sticking when you operate it, start by washing out the debris that has collected inside with this versatile spray, which can then be used to lubricate the lock to ensure smooth future operation.
Cleaning & Lubricating - Application;
Turn your lock upside down and using a little plastic straw in the can`s nozzle and putting the other end of that right in the keyway, squirt the GT85 directly into the lock.
As this is likely to result in surplus lubricant dribbling out of the lock during the process it`s a good idea to wear gloves whilst doing this to save your hands getting messy, and it is also a good idea to hold the lock over some cloth or an old towel, etc. to prevent the excess lubricant dropping on to other surfaces.
If your lock is really sticky to operate, you may need to apply more GT85, interspersing the application of the spray with inserting, operating and removing the key. In serious cases, this may entail as many as 30-40 repeats of the process.
The PTFE / silicone element contained within the GT85 spray makes this a more effective lubricant than products such as WD40 for instance, which are basically water displacement products with limited lubrication qualities. As well as being a good lubricant, PTFE also acts as an effective water repellent.
Maintaining your locks
Good quality precision made locks and padlocks do not normally require much maintenance, but it is important to keep them clean as dirt or grit getting inside can cause problems.
Traditional oils tend to attract dirt so should be avoided if possible, which is why a product like GT85 is a better choice for use as a cleaner / lubricant.
Typically a quick squirt of GT85 once or twice a year will be all that is needed, but in some more hostile environments such as salty coastal locations you may need to lubricate your lock more frequently to maintain top performance.
