Renewable energy at Pusey House
30-03-2016
In early 2015 isoenergy were commissioned to install a substantial heat pump system to service one of England’s most picturesque estates.
The 1750’s iteration of Pusey House is Grade II* listed, and is a beautiful example of Georgian architecture. To cater to this substantial property and its outbuildings isoenergy have been installing one of its largest ground source heat pump systems at over 200kW.
isoenergy were brought in to help the current owner replace the house’s outdated oil-fired boilers and bring multiple buildings on the estate together via a shared district heating system.
Following a long consultation process where the possibility of using a nearby lake to collect the energy for the heat pump system was discounted, the client was advised to use the adjacent livestock fields as the location to install the collector array. Although the lake provides a more easily replenished source of energy for a heat pump, the route through to the area used as the plant room was not practical.
The chosen system comprises of 9,000m of ground collector, this is split between 30 ground loops and covers an area of approximately 25,500m2. The ground collector was installed by White Horse Contracting Ltd, who with specialist pipe laying equipment made light work of the challenging ground conditions. This has been connected to a bespoke plantroom, purpose built for the heat pump system via 800m of flow and return pipework.
This extensive ground array is being used to support a heat pump system with a total capacity of 256kW. The target buildings covered by the heat pump system are the Main House, a Stable Block with converted accommodation above, an old School House and the Estate’s Shoot Room.
From the centrally located plantroom, the energy is distributed to each property via Uponor pre-insulated pipe to minimize thermal loss into the ground.
With the system set to be commissioned in April 2016, the client will then start to enjoy the benefit of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and a saving against heating the properties with oil, with the financial benefit from the RHI subsidy ensuring a good return on investment for the Estate owner.
Aside from the financial benefit, the environmental aspect is also not to be downplayed. Provisional estimations show a reduction in carbon emissions of 38%, a positive 62 tonnes of CO2/annum.
As the installation is still in progress there will be more updates to follow upon final commissioning.
