ORGANISING YOUR SHED

With most of us spending more time at home right now, you may have taken up a few hobbies in recent months. One such pastime which is becoming more and more popular is gardening. Whether you’ve become a green-fingered pro or you just enjoy pottering, gardening can be a good stress reliever and a great way to help make your outdoor space more enjoyable. If you have taken up a spot of gardening over the lockdown, you may have felt that a shed was a worthwhile purchase. Shed’s can be a great place for keeping all your gardening and DIY gear in one place, but they can quickly become disorganised, what with all the odds and ends you throw in there. To prevent your shed from becoming a dumping ground, we’ve put together some easy to follow organisation tips on keeping your shed in ship shape! HAVE A CLEAR OUT Before you begin organising your shed, start with a clear out. There may be things in there which you don’t use or no longer need. Getting rid of things which are no longer wanted will help create more space for the items you do use. SHELVING When it comes to sheds, shelving is key to keeping your equipment and tools well organised. Freestanding shelves are great if you have bulky items or need a place to keep storage boxes. If you are short on floor space, consider wall mounted designs. Either way, both are great options for shed storage. If you are building your own freestanding shelving unit, ensure it is sturdy enough to hold your desired equipment and be sure to properly test it out before placing it in your shed. HOOKS Utilising your wall space is essential if you have a small shed. Installing hooks and racks is a great use of walls for storage, especially for items which are awkward to store such as rakes and hoes. This way, you can keep items off the floor and at eye level, making them easier to retrieve. TOP TIP - ADD HOOKS TO THE BACK OF THE SHED DOOR. ANOTHER GREAT USE OF SPACE WHICH WON’T TAKE UP FLOOR SPACE! HOSES AND PIPES It can be easy for hoses and pipes to become tangled. To help keep them organised, follow our tip above and use wall hooks. This will allow you to wrap the hose around the hook, preventing it from getting tangled and messy. PEGBOARDS Installing a pegboard can be great for tool storage. They allow your tools to be easily identifiable whilst keeping them organised, plus it makes use of your wall space too. A similar alternative is a slatwall or a gridwall. Simply add hooks where necessary and use to hold a variety of tools and gardening equipment. JARS Small items such as screws and bolts can be a nightmare to keep organised. For small part storage, recycle old jars and use these to keep all your bits and pieces separated and easy to identify. LABELING If you are using jars, shelving, boxes or containers, then be sure to label these areas with the contents inside. This way, you know exactly where everything is without having to sift through your entire shed to fit what you’re looking for. ORGANISING YOUR EQUIPMENT When it comes to placing your equipment, be sure to keep your everyday items or most used items within easy reach. Your lesser used items can be put away either on high shelving or behind other storage items, which will help make better use of the space you have.
