A recent refurbishment to Staines railway station in Surrey has seen the installation of a new pedestrian guardrailing system, created using components from Kee Safety Ltd’s Kee Access® range. Helping to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), the new system has been fitted alongside a new access ramp at the entrance to ensure safe and easy access for all passengers using the station. Installation of the guardrailing system was part of a renovation programme at the station, which also included an upgrade of the ticket hall with wide automatic doors and step-free access to both platforms. Working together with railway engineering contractor GRAMM Interlink Rail, project architects BPR and Southwest Trains, Kee Safety supplied over 100 meters of safety guardrailing alongside the newly installed ramp to ensure improved station access for travelers of all ages and abilities. “Safety was our foremost concern when selecting the access ramp at the front of the station, and Kee Safety were just right for the job” says Steve Lee, Senior Construction Manager at GRAMM Interlink Rail. “The Kee Access® range meets the specification provided by the DDA. The Kee Access® series is designed to meet the needs of the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and gives a smooth handrail with size 7 tube (outside diameter 42.4mm). The fittings can be powder coated in a choice of RAL colours to meet the visibility and “not cold to the touch” requirements of the DDA. At Staines station, they are finished in an orange colour, ensuring an attractive appearance whilst benefiting the sight-impaired user. The structures were installed by Kee Safety’s own design and installation team.
