T-PUR® Spiders for ROTEX Couplings offer significant improvements in terms of fatigue strength and temperature resistance, while also maintaining all necessary technical features such as dampening and resistance to wear.
In recent years, electric drives applications have become more diverse, which has meant more challenges for traditional flexible couplings. Due to the relatively unknown physical environments in which some gearboxes and pumps may operate, high ambient conditions can cause spiders to reach (and exceed) their limits. In these instances, spiders from PEEK or other special compound elements are typically used. However, these are more expensive and generally lack the vibrational dampening and misalignment properties that are often required of couplings.
Clearly, spending more money on a compound that underperformed was less than ideal, which is why a new spider material for the ‘heart’ of the jaw coupling was needed. In response to this need, KTR developed a new spider material, T-PUR® for ROTEX® jaw couplings.
T-PUR Properties
T-PUR comes standard for spiders of ROTEX jaw couplings from size 14 to 180. The new material was rigorously tested under operating conditions where standard elastomers had failed. It offers significant improvements in terms of fatigue strength and temperature resistance, while also maintaining all necessary technical features such as dampening and resistance to wear.
New Colours: Previous spiders made from polyurethane were available in yellow, red, and white with green ends but have now been replaced by T-PUR spiders available in new colours with corresponding degrees of hardness or flexibility: Orange (92 Shore A), Purple (98 Shore A), and Pale green (64 Shore D).
Wider Temperature Range: The temperature resistance of the new T-PUR material is 35% greater than previous standard elastomers. This means T-PUR spiders can withstand temperatures ranging from -50 to +120 °C (+150 °C short term max.), compared to the previous standard range of -30 to +90 °C (+120 °C short term max.).
Reduced Maintenance Intervals: The fatigue strength is also significantly improved for ROTEX couplings with T-PUR material spiders. This ensures prolonged periods between maintenance and increased service life of the coupling system as a whole.
Given these improved properties, T-PUR is particularly well-suited for circumstances involving variable speeds, reversal of operation, and/or those that operate in high ambient temperatures. For example, T-PUR was field-tested on a well-known manufacturer of injection-moulding machines that operates under high ambient temperatures and frequent overload. The new material performed so well that the manufacturer now exclusively uses ROTEX couplings with T-PUR spiders.
Prior to T-PUR for ROTEX couplings, the standard course of action for unique or challenging drives was an expensive, customized solution. In reality, it is actually rare for electric drives to operate in ideal conditions. Therefore, it should stand to reason that most systems would benefit from utilizing an improved material such as T-PUR, which is precisely why we took a material developed (and once reserved) for special drives and turned it into a standard solution. This allows all KTR customers to benefit from improved fatigue strength and temperature resistance, without facing a hefty price tag.
Simply because something works better, doesn’t mean it should have to cost more too. What’s good for your machine, is good for business and it just makes sense to provide the absolute best.
