Bellhousings from high-performance nylon: Improved damping properties, high stiffness and low price Hydraulic power packs are becoming increasingly compact and efficient. One unpleasant consequence is that the noise emission is increasing too. To overcome this problem KTR introduced the KPT range of bellhousing made from a high-performance nylon material, which is of similar strength and stiffness to the aluminium bellhousing. As with metal bellhousings, the KPT series ensures the motor and pump shaft are central to support the long service life of the drive system. KTR ran a series of tests on their in-house test benches to analyse the features of the high-performance polymer. As well as proving their strength through extreme climate conditions, they were also found to reduce noise quite considerably. Tests in direct comparison with aluminium bellhousings resulted in a reduction of noise emission by up to 7.5 dB. It was also discovered during testing that if a KTR damping ring is used in conjunction with our standard aluminium bellhousing, the noise emission is reduced by up to 12.4 dB. As the results show, customers looking for a low-cost solution to combine an electric motor with a hydraulic pump and at the same time want to reduce noise levels there is now a less expensive alternative to aluminium bellhousings combined with a damping ring. However for those who wish to achieve maximum noise reduction, the standard arrangement of an aluminium bellhousing along with the usual damping elements such as damping rings, damping rods and elastic flanges would be the first choice. In essence if you need a low cost option to reduce ambient noise by up to 7.5 dB, a KTR nylon bellhousing would be the preferred selection. On the other hand, if you need a higher noise reduction then the traditional standard aluminium bellhousing with a KTR damping ring continues to be the recommended first choice.
