Couplings and Overload Systems for Marine Technology

KTR produce a wide variety of couplings for marine technology applications. One of the most prominent products in the market is the ROTEX® elastic jaw coupling used in bow thruster drive systems of freight and passenger vessels. The ROTEX® coupling is installed between the motor and gearbox to cushion and reduce shocks and vibrations. This feature prolongs the service life of the components in the drive train and compensates for axial, radial and angular misalignments. The shock-reducing properties may be customised to each individual application using various elastomer materials. It is becoming increasingly common for tug boats and other vessels to be fitted with Azimuth drive systems. The Azimuth drive is mounted on bearings which enables the entire propeller unit to swivel providing extraordinary manoeuvrability. For the electrically driven swivel movement of the propeller unit, KTR produce ROTEX® couplings complete with the KTR-SI overload system. This combination protects the unit against high torque shocks and acts as a safety feature, for instance, when the propeller hits the sea bed during rotation, which in turn extends the service life of the components. Alternatively, KTR offers the backlash-free ROTEX®-GS and the unique KTR-SI Compact overload system. Manufacturers of Azimuth compact drive systems use this safety coupling within vessels and propulsion units for drilling rigs. A range of marine technology applications such as feed pumps, bilge pumps, winches and cranes use KTR couplings. All KTR’s couplings are subject to design tests which are approved by a number of professional bodies including Lloyds, ABS, Norske Veritas and the German Bureau Veritas so you can be sure the products are provided with world-wide approval for use in shipbuilding.
