Next month, the first UK cryogenic power storage plant is set to open which will use electricity to store surplus energy in the form of liquid air to be released whenever it is required. The Highview Power Storage plant has already been providing electricity to the National Grid since April 2010 during a pilot scheme for the concept. The plant is hoped to provide a cost effective and efficient energy storage solution to handle the anticipated future growth of intermittent energy supplies expected to develop due to a growing focus on wind and solar energy sources.
