Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are surface water management practices that mimic natural drainage processes. Also known as sustainable urban drainage systems, SuDS are a great alternative to traditional drainage systems as these manage rainwater locally instead of channelling water to nearby watercourses through pipes and sewers.

These sustainable drainage systems are designed to decrease surface water flooding, reduce the burden on sewerage systems, improve water quality by reducing pollution from runoff, slow the flow of water to allow it to infiltrate into the ground and help wildlife thrive in urban areas. These have started to become more popular in recent years as we started to understand the way urban developments affect natural environments.
