Ashdowne handcrafted tiles provide a traditional finish to this modern roof
Marley Eternits Ashdowne clay plain tile has been specified on a prestigious private housing development in Sunderland - with local planners happy to approve use of a modern tile on a new build that seamlessly compliments the traditional appearance of neighbouring Victorian and Edwardian style properties in the surrounding area.
The need to specify a roof design that helped the new property blend seamlessly into its location lay at the heart of the architects design vision. The Ashdowne clay plain tile is handcrafted by Marley Eternit and offers a warm, mellow appearance with a granular texture and slight irregularities that make each clay plain tile unique. It is an ideal choice when seeking a high quality roofing solution that delivers a traditional aesthetic look.
The exclusive residential property, which is part of The Cedars development, was designed by leading North-East based architects, PlanIT Design. Clare Stagg, who led the design team,
is in no doubt as to the qualities the Ashdowne plain clay tile brought to the overall project. She says: "The site in question is adjacent to the Ashbrooke Conservation Area which is renowned for its high quality Victorian villas and Edwardian terraces. Many of the properties have a grand and ornate classical theme with an arts and crafts influence and this helped inform the design of the new property we were creating."
To meet the design vision requirements on such a prestigious build, the chosen roof tile had to be of a recognised high quality, as well as offer the appearance characteristics to satisfy local authority planners that the development would be suitable in its environment. Clare Stagg continues: "Having considered the options, it became clear that the Ashdowne plain clay tile would help us to meet a key objective which was to ensure that the development complimented the existing residential properties in the vicinity. Importantly, the local authority planners also agreed and they welcomed the use of such a high quality clay tile."
When it came to the design and construction phase, over 22,000 tiles in an Ashhurst colour were used, and the handcrafted appearance of the tile ensures that the dominant roof form and overhanging eaves have an attractive, high quality aesthetic. It is also sympathetic to the overall design of the property which has been constructed using a sand stone brick and a large amount of natural stone.
Clare Stagg concludes: "We are delighted with the contribution that the Ashdowne plain clay tile has made to the finished appeal of the property. We are confident that we have specified a high quality roofing material for an exclusive home that helps deliver a design totally in keeping with traditional look of the other properties in the locality. The combination of colour, texture and quality performance made the Ashdowne plain clay tile the perfect choice for this high end residential design."
