A major extension to a school building on the exposed west coast of Scotland has benefited from Marley Eternit Profile 6 sheeting on its roof.
Located near the Isle of Skye, the fibre cement sheets will ensure that the building can withstand the extreme weather conditions found in this part of the UK.
Glenelg Primary School was previously only a two classroom school but following the extension it is now a modern teaching facility - Marley Eternits Profile 6 sheets were used to create three additional classrooms, a staff base and an IT suite.
The extension was designed by The Highland Council with the aim of achieving an internal environment with breathable walls and roof. Profile 6 helped achieve this because it is vapour permeable yet completely waterproof. That means if any moisture from inside the building does penetrate the Vapour Control Layer under the insulation, Profile 6 will allow it to diffuse to the outside, limiting the amount of condensation within the roof structure.
Condensation can create an issue with some air-tight and fully interlocking roof systems such as steel sheets as it prevents the diffusion of this water vapour to the outside. Over time, this can lead to corrosion of the steel along with rotting of the timber in the roof structure itself. As well as being vapour permeable, Profile 6 has no metallic content, giving it a high level of corrosion resistance and increased product life expectancy.
Recycled paper was used to insulate the structure, which was fitted between the roof joists.
The Highland Council also specified Profile 6 from Marley Eternit because it best met their colour requirements. Profile 6 is offered in ten standard colours, and the colour blue was selected for Glenelg Primary School because it complemented the natural slate roofing on the original building.
Dorothy Buchanan, Principal Architect at The Highland Council, said: "We wanted a roofing material for the extension that met several important criteria. It needed to be attractive and fit in with the rural environment, whilst also being durable and creating a breathable structure. Profile 6 met these criteria and we are extremely pleased with the outcome - so much so that we will be using it again for an extension at another school."
Profile 6 from Marley Eternit is used widely on schools, leisure, industrial and residential projects to create a durable and cost effective building envelope. It has a minimum life span of 50 years.
Profile 6 has achieved British Board of Agreement Certificate 00/3700 and is ideal for refurbishment and new-build developments. It can be fitted as both roofing and vertical cladding in either single skin or insulated constructions.
Marley Eternit is the only UK-based manufacturer of fibre cement sheeting, providing customers with a reduced carbon footprint compared to overseas manufactured products.
