It is described as the healthcare scheme of the future with the ultimate aim of meeting every health need of the surrounding community and Marley Eternit has played its part in helping to shape this innovative healthcare scheme by using its expertise in the sector to provide technical support and products.
The new £13 million Milehouse Primary Care Centre in Staffordshire sits at the heart of Mill Rise Village which is one of the first schemes outside of the London area to combine a state-of-the-art primary care centre with extra care housing for the over 55s. The centre is home to three GP practices and offers a range of services including physiotherapy, podiatry and speech and language therapy.
Marley Eternit provided 30,000 of its Rivendale fibre cement slates in blue/black colour to cover the entire roof of the primary care centre. It fulfilled stringent specification guidelines of a product that would be in keeping with the ground-breaking scheme and the aesthetic surroundings of the local area.
The project saw Marley Eternits technical experts work with on-site roofing contractor, Crosby Roofing, on the pioneering large-scale construction project.
Emma Horton, commercial manager at Crosby Roofing, said: “This is a really unique healthcare development and one of the first outside of London. Therefore, it was important to understand the needs of the project completely and have a product that was in keeping with the innovative nature of the scheme.
“We wanted to have an aesthetic tile that would emulate a natural slate appearance. We decided that Rivendale was a perfect match which ticked all the right boxes.”
In addition, Marley Eternit also provided a dry fix roofing system. As the system does not require any mortar, it can be used in all weather conditions and is low maintenance, particularly important for sites such as the Milehouse Primary Care Centre.
The Rivendale is a fibre cement slate that offers outstanding aesthetics. The finely detailed surface and dressed edges closely resembles natural slate, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the roof. Furthermore, the Rivendale fibre cement slate benefits from being a strong and highly durable product whilst also being light weight. In addition, all Marley Eternit fibre cement slates are manufactured in the UK and are the only slate product of its kind that can achieve an A+ rating, the lowest environmental impact in the Building Research Establishments Green Guide to Specification.
In addition to the roof covering, Marley Eternit also supplied Cedral Weatherboard in colour grey for the new primary care centre. As an alternative to traditional timber weatherboarding, Cedral Weatherboard is designed to resemble the natural and aesthetically pleasing look of timber, whilst presenting the added benefit of low-maintenance and rot-resistance.
John Haycock from Marley Eternit said: “This is one of the first schemes of its kind in the UK so it was important to use the right products. We have a lot of experience in the healthcare sector so we were confident that we could deliver a product and service to match the expectations.”
