Passive or Proactive: Choosing the Best Tracking System for Your Caravan or Motorhome

Statistics show that installing a tracking device in your caravan or motorhome is the most effective way to ensure its recovery if stolen. Additionally, having a tracker can help lower your insurance costs, as many companies offer discounts for vehicles with tracking devices.

With many tracking systems available, how do you determine the best option for you? You have two choices: a battery-operated self-fit option (Mi01) or one of our S5 or S7 models which offer connected security options, providing you with the ability to do more than track your vehicle when stolen. These can be immobilised to prevent theft. Essentially, a tracker is a small device hidden within your caravan or motorhome, powered by your backup battery and with its own battery as a backup. Trackers generally fall into two categories: passive and proactive.

Which tracking system is best?

Passive Trackers

A passive tracker, like the Moving Intelligence iTrack S7 and Mi01, relies on the owner notifying a control centre that the vehicle has been stolen. The control centre then communicates with the device to locate the vehicle and works with the police and owners to recover it.

Advantages:

  • It's a less expensive option.
  • Suitable if your vehicle is stored at home or under constant supervision.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires you to know your vehicle has been stolen before the tracker can be used to locate it.
  • May not be effective if your vehicle is stored offsite and it takes days to realise it's missing.

Proactive Trackers

A proactive tracker, such as the Pro3 caravan tracker or iTrack S5, automatically alerts a control centre of potential theft by continuously monitoring the vehicle's motion, power status, or unauthorised ignition without the ADR tags. The control centre can then track the vehicle's location with the police and owner.

Advantages:

  • Ideal for vehicles stored in remote or unsupervised locations.
  • Thieves are often apprehended within an hour of the vehicle being taken.
  • Provides continuous monitoring and immediate alerts.

Disadvantages:

  • Generally more expensive than passive trackers.

Choosing the Right Tracker

If your vehicle is kept at home or under constant supervision: A passive tracker may be sufficient. It's cost-effective and will serve the purpose as long as you can monitor the vehicle regularly.

If your vehicle is stored in remote or unsupervised areas: A proactive tracker is recommended. It provides an immediate response to potential theft, increasing the chances of recovery and preventing theft.

Our most popular product combines the proactive S5 tracker with ADR tags and our Vanguard Motorhome Alarm, offering excellent value and features such as Pet Mode. It's a complete theft prevention service.

Summary

  • Passive Trackers: Best for home-stored vehicles under constant supervision. Less expensive but requires manual notification.
  • Proactive Trackers: Ideal for remote or unsupervised storage. More expensive but provides continuous monitoring and immediate alerts.

Whichever option you choose, Moving Intelligence offers a full range of both passive and proactive trackers to meet various needs and budgets.
