A History Of VELCRO®: Where Did It Start?
Let’s start at the beginning, the idea for VELCRO® first came about in 1948. It was founded by a Swiss engineer George de Mestral, who came up with the idea during a holiday trip in the Jura Mountains, which run through Switzerland and France.
While traipsing the mountains with his dog, Mestral found that the pair of them were covered in cocklebur plants. These spike, seedy plants had latched themselves to both Mestral and his dog, which became tricky to remove. After removing the seedy cocklebur plants, Mestral kept a hold of the pods for further inspection when he returned from his trip.
When Mestral looked at the pods under a microscope, he noticed their hundreds of tiny hooks and curved sickles which attached themselves to fabric. This gave Mestral an idea! He started to weave his own hooks, creating fasteners that could attach themselves to fabrics with little luck.
Eventually, Mestral met an inventive weaver, who was able to help bring Mestral’s vision to life! After trying various fabrics, they realised that nylon was the perfect material to create their fasteners, making an almost indestructible creation. And this was the first creation of VELCRO®!
VELCRO® was later patented in 1955, and it went on to be widely used in a range of applications!
Why The Name VELCRO®?
VELCRO® inventor De Mestral, used the French words for velvet, ‘velour’ and the French word for hook ‘crochet’, blended together to create the name VELCRO® we know today!
