World Wetlands Day
What are Wetlands?
Wetlands are unique ecosystems that are either permanently or seasonally submerged in water. They support a number of different species that have adapted to living there and they are dynamic, as they change with the seasons. There is a range of different wetlands that form all over the world, from rivers and streams to marshes and mudflats.
Wetlands are important because they are rich in nature, act as water sources and purifiers and they are crucial to agriculture and fisheries. They also are the world's largest storers of natural carbon. Find out more about the importance of Wetlands here>>
World Wetlands Day (WWD)
2nd February 2022 marks the critical role wetlands play around the world, and this year’s theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature,” aims to motivate individuals, businesses, and governments to “invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded.”
There are three main messages that WWD is trying to get across: the first is the importance and value that wetlands have for both humans and for keeping a health planet. The second is the management that is required to conserve and sustain the health of these critical ecosystems. And finally, restoration of lost and degraded wetlands in order to revive the rich biodiversity and life found in these areas.
