Wastage Recovery: How one company is Profiting from Recovery of Oil Seed Rape

Oil Seed Rape Meal Recovery KitRapeseed meal extract is a residual product generated during the manufacture of rapeseed oil. The oil is extracted from the plant's seeds, leaving behind a byproduct known as rapeseed meal. This meal is rich in protein and can be used as a substitute for soy in animal feed, or to modify the fatty acid composition of milk.

An agricultural processing facility approached North Ridge Pumps with a request to recycle their rapeseed meal and create an income stream from the waste product, while also aiming to meet their sustainability goals.

They had noticed that significant amounts of meal were being produced during the cold pressing of oils, which was not being used efficiently. The meal was collecting in pits or containers with water, and the customer wanted a way to move it quickly across their facility for resale and transport.

To address this issue, North Ridge worked closely with the customer to understand the properties of the fluid, including its viscosity, solid concentration, and characteristics, as waste liquids can vary between plants. Some waste products can be highly viscous and abrasive in nature making transfer fluid transfer difficult as they require a pump to operate slowly to not only allow fluid to flow slowly into the inlet but also to ensure that the pump does not suffer from abrasive wear when hard particles pass through the pump at great speed.

By reviewing images and videos of the fluid being poured, stirred, or agitated, North Ridge was able to determine the best pump technology for the application, which was a pump which operated at medium to high speeds as the fluid was fairly free flowing in nature.

North Ridge specified and provided a self-priming mobile pump kit that could draw fluid from tanks below the pump or directly from vessels and transfer it up to 10 meters horizontally and 6 meters vertically.

The pump was designed to handle fluid at processing temperatures of 50°C and suspended solids up to a few millimeters in diameter. It was also equipped with a local on-off switch for ease of control and a 10-meter 3-phase power cable.

By using a pump kit, the customer was able to recover waste product more efficiently, automate fluid transfer, and eliminate manual handling. North Ridge's ability to provide customized solutions enabled them to meet the customer's unique requirements and handle virtually any kind of fluid.
