Hygienic pumps are pumps which are constructed from materials which can be sanitised, cleaned and have had dead zones removed to ensure bacteria can not accumulate in areas of the pump. The most common material used for hygienic pumps is 316 stainless steel which can be pressed or cast. This is polished to different grades which determines which applications it can be used in.Such pumps may have Cleaning in Place (CIP) ports for ease of cleaning, and have hygienic connections which do not contain areas which can not be fully cleaned such as threaded connections. There are differing grades of hygienic pumps depending on the process and fluid. Pumps can be self approved by the manufacturer or verified by third parties such as 3A approved, FDA approved, or EHEDG. Regulation EC1935/2004 requires all materials to be traceable including sealing materials.
