Pumps are often needed to handle solids but as to what solids can be conveyed depends on a number of factors. Solids are generally conveyed as part of a liquid and as such have a tendency to separate from the liquid due to difference in density and gravity as well as being affected by pumping technology such as centrifugal forces.
The larger the density of the particle the higher the likelihood of it separating from the fluid. Turbulence within the flow within pipework will counteract separation. The way in which it will be transferred depends on flow rate, size of particles, and concentration.
