The new tungsten electrode that will eventually become the number one tungsten as Thoriated electrodes become harder to import due to the radioactive content. 

The purple tungsten really is a true non-radioactive alternative to the thoriated tungsten electode. Why? 
The E3 electrode as it is known has many benefits! 

• The electrode tip remains cooler than its thoriated cousin 
• It possesses superior repeatable ignition characteristics
• Has increased arc stability
• Benefits from reduced burn off
• Can carry a higher current than the alternatives
• Improved tip degradtion of the electrode tip

For example - when using the same current density the E3 electrodes are around 900 degrees C less than a 2% Th (Red Tip) tungsten. Certainly not something to be sniffed at.
