With 225 years of technical expertise, we’re always up for a challenge at Ormiston Wire.
But when artist Suzanne Lynas sought our advice on the best components for hanging a Megalodon shark from the ceiling of the Essex Wildlife Trust’s Naze Centre, we thought she might have bitten off more than she could chew.
The 12 metre-long, 65 ton bulk of the largest predator in vertebrate history makes Jaws look like a minnow — and would test the mettle of our specialist suspension wire.
Suzanne soon explained that we were 2.6 million years too late to see a real Megalodon — but installing the realistic model she had created would still be challenging for her team.
The Challenge
• Four-metre long shark sculpture suspended from a Glulam beam.
• Wooden object with canvas skin weighing 75kg, hanging above a public area — safety was paramount in this project.
• Client requested discreet metal cables and fittings for a smooth visual effect.
Our solution for Suzanne
• Sturdy 878-1005 top fixing to secure tough 702-1502 suspension wire to Glulam beam.
• Wire secured to inside of shark using innovative superclamp system.
• Shark secured at several points for security and stability.
The result
Suzanne said the Essex Wildlife Trust are ‘really pleased with the aesthetics of the slimline fittings’ and her installation team are ‘impressed with how easy the superclamps and other components were to fit and use.’
This superb shark model helps visitors dive into the murky but magnificent waters of prehistory — we’re tempted to head down to The Naze Centre ourselves to see if we can be next to find a fossilised Megalodon tooth.
