Penn Packaging > Labelling with Renner: Schwartauer Werke. Naturally delicious, perfectly labelled
The iconic logo featuring seven church towers from the historic town of Lübeck is a recognizable symbol for children across Germany. For over 115 years, it has represented the delicious spreads produced by Schwartauer Werke in Bad Schwartau, near the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.
As part of a relaunch of a breakfast classic, Schwartauer Werke introduced a new, more natural recipe for their popular fruit products, including the renowned “Schwartau Extra" jam. This relaunch also involved transitioning to a new organic glass format with leaf-style embossing, presenting a new challenge for the labelling process.
To address the intricate labelling requirements of the new 200, 340, and 600-g containers, Schwartauer Werke turned to RENNER for a modern solution. With the implementation of two RENNER S1800 Modul machines, the company achieved precise alignment of labels through advanced camera systems and servo-controlled pads. These machines offer high efficiency with a maximum output of 33,000 jars per hour, while also minimizing maintenance costs through transmission-free servo-motor technology.
The innovative design of the RENNER S1800 Modul machines not only ensures accurate labelling but also incorporates features for quality assurance, such as control units for label positioning and tightness. This strategic upgrade positions Schwartauer Werke for success in their relaunch and future labelling endeavors, both in terms of quality and technological advancement.
Adaptable Production Strategies
Tobias Seßler highlighted another key advantage of the RENNER solution, emphasizing its exceptional flexibility in meeting evolving production and marketing demands. “In times of need, we can seamlessly transition from parallel operations to increased throughput by simply adjusting the machine’s front table," explained the Project Manager. The adaptable structure also allows for future upgrades, including the integration of self-adhesive dispensers and the seamless implementation of servo-control, self-centering features, and automatic height adjustment.
Embracing Industry 4.0 Innovations
To ensure maximum efficiency across the system, both machines are extensively interconnected using a combination of customer-specific hardware and software interfaces, as well as Ethernet protocols following the Weihenstephan Standard. Beyond monitoring operational data, the system actively tracks product flow and consumables, transmitting this valuable information to higher-level IT systems. For comprehensive machine support throughout its lifecycle, RENNER Service can securely access the machine network through a VPN connection, physically segregated from the customer network for enhanced data protection.
Prepared for Future Challenges
“Investing in our state-of-the-art Modul machines has positioned us optimally for our relaunch and future labelling endeavors," concluded Tobias Seßler. “We are not only equipped for maintaining high-quality standards but also for embracing advancements in information technology."
