Elastic Polishing Points
02-01-2015
I had the joy this weekend of trying out these elastic points. I expected them to be soft like a rubber point, but how wrong was I!
Elastic Polishing Points
I used the Hard Bond In Fine 240G straight off. normally I would start with a medium or coarse but actually this point did just the job and left a smooth semi-polished finish.

I pierced the flowers from sterling sheet. This always leaves a sharp edge with some burrs. The shape requires smoothing between the petals. Now this could be a real pain working through files and wet and dry paper.
I simply went in with a needle file to refine the shape, then straight on to the elastic polishing point. I could then have used a little wet and dry where the gap was too tight to get in to. The points are nice and firm but don’t gouge like vitrified grinding points. They also don’t create mess like some rubber points do. They can be ground to a point again when they lose the sharpness. I would recommend the Hard Bond points if you like to keep a sharp working point.
It vastly sped up the finishing which I was glad of working in a cold workshop, so for anyone batch producing it would be a real hit. I wish I had, had these points when I was working as a Bench Jeweller.
I finally finished the piece with Radial Discs working from Blue, to Peach and then Light Green. For a hammered texture this gave a really nice finish without removing the detail which a polishing motor can often .
