Big Carl at Hinkley Point C
18-07-2023
Hinkley Point C is the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 20 years. The monumental 400-acre development based in Somerset will make a major effort towards the UK?s move to reduce carbon emissions by supplying low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes.
Construction of the ?23 billion project will create 25,000 employment opportunities and is due to be completed in June 2026.
One renowned member of the construction crew is Big Carl.
Big Carl is the world?s strongest land-based crane, standing an impressive 820 ft tall and has the ability to carry 5,000 tonnes in a single lift.
In late 2020 Big Carl placed the first 575-tonne steel ring to form the reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor. Less than a year later, Big Carl has placed the second of three 575-tonne rings on the second reactor.
The astounding latest images show Big Carl in action lifting the hefty ring into place. The inside of this impressive structure also shows Protectapeel? Anti-Rust protecting the surface from rusting. Protectapeel? Anti-Rust has also been used to protect the anchor plates within the framework.
This spectacular project?s electricity will offset 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emission a year or 600 million tonnes over its 60-year lifespan.
