Stress Awareness Within Construction
18-07-2023
Stress Awareness Month has been held every April since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and cures for stress. Managing stress is essential for a healthy lifestyle, improving mental and physical well-being as well as minimising serious health risks.
A study from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has found that 58% of the construction workforce feels that the industry has become more stressful over the last 15 years. 42% of UK construction workers currently live with mental health problems whilst trying to cope at work. During 2022 mental health services in England received a record 4.6 million referrals, a shocking 22% increase from 2019. (BMA) Mental health-related absences within the construction industry account for over 400,000 working days lost each year, and deaths from suicide are ten times higher than deaths from injury. (HSE)
Mental health awareness campaigns have dominated the media over the last few years with numerous charities and organisations set up to help people in crisis.
