For the first time industrial marking and traceability specialist Pryor Marking Technology will be
attending the LASYS laser processing trade fair in Stuttgart. Their stand will showcase their
recent innovations for major automotive OEMs, providing turn-key robotic laser marking systems.
Established in Sheffield in 1849 as a supplier of marking stamps to the cutlery trade, today Pryor
Marking Technology is a leading traceability partner to some of the world’s most prestigious
manufacturers. Its customers are mainly in the aerospace and automotive industries, but also
include steelmakers, power generation organisations and general manufacturers.
Since the start of 2013 robotic marking systems have become the company’s expertise and in
2014 they were awarded a prestigious industry prize for innovation for their work with Jaguar
Land Rover. The judges highlighted the company as an example of history being no barrier to
innovation and praised it for re-inventing itself over the years to go from “marking cutlery to
marking cars”.
David Ray, Technical Director at Pryor Marking Technology, who collected the award on behalf of
the company said: “Traceability is a critical part of the modern manufacturing process, especially
in the safety-critical aerospace and automotive sectors. We believe that, by working closely with
our customers to develop bespoke systems that meet their specific needs, we have played a key
role in their on-going success, and the award is validation of this strategy.
The key innovation has been to provide a laser system capable of marking the chassis VIN within
the 59 second cycle time. Systems already installed in the UK and China are capable of marking
chassis in multiple locations, automatically identifying the correct mark location with Cognex
vision systems and verifying the quality of the mark once it has made.
Pryor delivered the full system, including duty and back-up ABB robots, laser controllers and
integration to the factory PLC.
The multiple marking of chassis has enabled the manufacturer to lower the insurance group of the
vehicle, while the high quality laser marking has eradicated the risk of finished vehicles being
rejected at port of entry. Together these factors provided significant financial motivations for the
OEM to invest in the latest marking technology.
Pryor Marking Technology manufactures the widest range of permanent marking systems in the
market along with data-matrix readers, verifiers and traceability solutions.
