Southend High School For Girls
15-03-2021
Southend High School for Girls, a dynamic school for young girls from Year 7 to 13, contacted Rap Interiors to design a coffee shop for their Sixth Form Students. They required the interior design to take on a more sophisticated look, and not to reflect a normal refurbished school classroom. Collaborating with the student’s mood board, Rap’s designers created an inspirational coffee shop fit out and design.
The Rap Interiors’ designers were able to create a mature interior design for the sixth form students with a dark colour scheme, inspired by their mood board. The abundance of natural light through the large windows ensured the space wasn’t overpowered with this dark colour scheme. The walls of the room were painted in a dark navy blue along and a matching navy carpet tile in a modern pattern.
This dark and fluid carpet in a camouflage pattern was specifically chosen for this space as it would be a high traffic where drinks and food would be consumed. The herringbone wood effect vinyl flooring created a contrast against this patterned carpet for a more luxurious and home-like feel that is more appropriate for the older students and this coffee shop space.
The interior designers included different seating zones for this coffee shop inspired space with a variety of school furniture options for the students, dissimilar to normal classroom furniture. To create a large social space, grey banquet seating was installed with a wipeable vinyl fabric finish for durability purposes, along with high poseur tables and bright orange stools that add a pop of colour to the dark interior colour scheme.
Southend High School for Girls now has an attractive breakout space for the sixth form students. This school coffee shop has created a large social space for the older students with sophisticated features to feel separated from their younger peers.
A word from Alice, Designer at Rap Interiors
“It is vital to consider all factors when creating a 6th Form breakout zone for schools and the student’s benefit. We focus on designing functional areas around 6th Form life and recognising the students want to feel special and gain more independence and freedom. It was fantastic to have the student’s ideas on a mood board and work with them on this.”
Feedback from Angela Clarke, Director of Finance and Business at Southend High School for Girls
“The headteacher and head of sixth form are happy with it and we’ve had some nice comments... We are having Rap Interiors look at another area of the school, a school library design and refurbishment project.”
