Why and How is Plastic Used in the Construction Industry?
Plastics have been used for over 100 years and can be used for many different things. The construction industry is the second highest consumer of plastics, after packaging. The industry uses it for many different things, including seals, windows, doors, pipes, cables, floor coverings and insulation to name a few.
The main types of plastic used in construction are polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and expanded polystyrene (EPS); these materials are often inexpensive and durable, which is perfect for use in construction.
Advantages of using plastic in construction
Versatility – As listed above, plastic can be adapted to many different forms and uses. Plastics are also hardwearing and waterproof so can be used in any condition.
Durability and strength – Plastic is as strong as and, in some cases, stronger than metal and can withstand extreme weather, meaning plastic can last for many years.
Cost effective – Many plastics are economical and inexpensive to use.
Low maintenance – Once installed, plastic requires little to no upkeep and maintenance.
Corrosion Resistant – This allows plastic to be used in many different places and settings without worrying about its surroundings.
Lightweight – This is useful in construction as the materials will need to be carried around and lifted into place, which with heavier, stronger materials, can risk the safety of workers.
Easy to install – Plastics are easier to use than metals as they are much lighter.
Recyclable – Many plastics can be recycled repeatedly without losing any chemical properties. This is better for the environment and can be more cost-effective.
Uses for plastic in construction
Conservatory Roofs
Conservatory roofs are most commonly made of polycarbonate, a strong, clear and lightweight material. Window frames are commonly made from UPVC and filled with fiberglass, this is due to the strength and insulation of fiberglass and the durability of UPVC.
Insulation
There are many types of plastics that are great insulators. For example, polyurethane is frequently used for insulation as it is a good thermal insulator and performs as an air barrier to regulate temperature.
Pipes
Plastic materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are often used to create pipes as they can be flexible and lightweight making them easy to install. They are also strong and waterproof, meaning they can withstand extreme weathers.
Flooring
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene are most commonly used for flooring as they are waterproof and are scratch and stain resistant. PVC flooring can also reduce noise levels and can be cleaned easily.
Doors
Plastic materials are often used in the production of doors as they are durable, lightweight and maintenance free. PVC is one of the common plastic materials used for doors as they are less prone to wear and damage, meaning they can be exposed to many different weather conditions.
