Rotalube Increases Productivity for Global Closure Systems One of the world’s market leaders in closure and dispensing systems sector, Global Closure Systems (GCS) serves the demanding needs of the Fast Moving Consumer Market worldwide. From its 21 manufacturing sites around the world, the group offers a wide range of standard and custom plastic closures and dispensing systems for numerous global markets, including beverage, food, household, health care, personal care, wine and spirits. In this industry, productivity is key. So when the company’s lubrication systems started to cause production problems, Onsite Maintenance Engineer looked to Rotalube to make improvements. The printing machines’ chains were lubricated by a semi-automated oil drip feed system. Oil was dispensed and controlled by a simple timer and delivered to brushes that were in contact with the chains. The brushes became clogged with very quickly and there was a frequent requirement for cleaning and the brush applicators had to be replaced on a regular basis. The result of clogged up brushes would mean that the oil would not penetrate the chain links which would cause vibration of the process and, as this caused the shells to fall off the arms of the machines, there was a major impact on productivity. To overcome this, the old system would have to be manually overridden. If the brushes were not clogged it would have to lubricate for two complete cycles of the chain before the vibration stopped, but if the brushes were clogged then they would have to be replaced or cleaned - all time-consuming activities resulting in costly downtime and, crucially, affecting the bottom line. As part of a programme of ongoing improvement, United Closures & Plastics Ltd introduced four Rotalube® systems to lubricate the machines’ 200 metre main chains. A precise method of lubricating chain, Rotalube® is a patented invention that delivers the right amount of lubricant to the exact point of the chain that enables lubricant to penetrate into the pin and bush of each chain link irrespective of chain speed. The revolutionary Rotalube® system significantly extends chain life and reduces maintenance costs which is paramount in today’s competitive global market place. Onsite Maintenance Engineer said: “Since the New Rotalube systems have been installed there has been no reported instance of vibration and, from early experience, the frequency of lubrication is being turned down - resulting in significant lubricant savings.”
