Easter Island Heads / Moai Statues
It is widely believed that the inhabitants of the Polynesian Island of Rapa Nui, (Easter Island), carved 'Moai Statues', or Easter Island Heads, between 1250 and 1500 AD to commemorate their ancestors.
The first European to lay eyes on one of the imposing figures - described as heads given their disproportionate appearance - was the Dutch explorer Roggeveen in 1722. When Captain Cook landed just over 50 years later, many had been toppled.
The largest of the Moai statues - which feature elongated eyebrow ridges and other enlarged features - stands over 10m tall. Their construction and transport is seen as one of the great feats of mankind.

Round Wood Easter Island Heads
In 2008 we decided to commission an exclusive design of Easter Island Head that, whilst remaining portable and practical, did justice to the original Moai Heads on Rapa Nui. The range included a 126cm model that, despite weighing less than its smaller reconstituted stone counterparts, was the largest available in the UK on a non bespoke basis. A 2.05 metre model followed in 2010.
As these garden statues have been so successful, we have decided to extend our range so that it encompasses different styles of Easter Island Head.
This is the first of the Tongariki themed statues offered. Like most of it counterparts it is a giant feature, standing at 1.6m tall.
Remarkably, it can still be handled into position, unlike any of the heads on Easter Island which boast an average weight of almost 14 tons. This has been achieved through casting and sculpting with a frost-proof, malleable concrete and fibreglass composite that allows for a thick layer to be crafted around a hollow mould.
A fibreglass mesh interwoven into the composite ensures that the innovative production process does not sacrifice durability. Colouration is achieved through hand staining in layers. The finish may dull or patina over time, depending on positioning, but this only serves to enhance the natural, authentic finish.
Tongariki Ahu
Ahus are stone platforms that typically face the sea. Over 300 were found on Rapa Nui, at least 100 of which are known to have definitely supported Moai statues. Ahu Tongariki is the largest on the island. It was swept inland in the last century, but has since been restored. The heads found on Ahu Tongariki typically feature long bodies and wizened arms.
