A Rubb aviation hangar building project has assumed a prominent position at Aerohub, the UK’s only aerospace focused Enterprise Zone, based in Newquay, Cornwall. The project will provide a large, bespoke space for Apple Aviation Group (AAG) increased Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operations.
Apple Aviation has selected Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport as the location for its aerospace maintenance facility headquarters.
The Rubb team began constructing the main steel framework for the hangar in April 2014 and then fixed Thermohall insulated PVC cladding to the structure to create its roof and walls.
The Rubb hangar will provide 25,000 sq. ft. of aircraft storage and maintenance space. The facility measures 47m wide x 50m long with 8m high sidewalls and an overall height of 18m. A Megadoor measuring 43m wide x 14m at its highest point provides access to the hangar.
Commercial Director of Apple Aviation, Bernard Longman, said: "Our MRO facility at Aerohub will include aircraft storage and recycling space and we look forward to building relationships with the local community and businesses in addition to contributing to the economy in the South West.”
Managing Director of Rubb Buildings, Ian Hindmoor, said: “We are very excited about completion of the project. This is another flagship facility to utilize new Rubb technology such as the Thermohall insulated cladding. The project itself came with various challenges, including the exposed nature of the site. However, by working together with the contractors and clients, we have managed to achieve a topflight aircraft hangar we are all very happy with. The high specifications including the materials, engineering, Megadoor technology and internal services will ensure the MRO hangar will be used for many years to come.”
Al Titterington, Managing Director, Newquay Cornwall Airport commented: “The speed and flexibility of the RUBB hangar construction has enabled the airport to develop new hangarage and respond quickly to a key customer's requirements. This has been critical in order for business to be undertaken in a competitive market place and puts NQY firmly on the MRO map with the capability to attract airlines to the facility”.

The aircraft storage and maintenance hangar features Rubb’s galvanized internal steel frame and the ‘BVL’ structure includes a lattice roof and leg section. Thermohall insulated cladding (150mm) completes the facility, providing a u value of 0.25w/m²k. Thermohall cladding is a composite structure consisting of a durable PVC layer and non-combustible glass wool high density insulation core inside an air-tight pocket and a self-cleaning PVC inner layer. The insulated panel system provides a full vapour seal which reduces infiltration losses and minimises thermal bridging, reducing condensation on framing members and improving insulation efficiency.
The building also includes six pedestrian doors and one 5m x 5m roller shutter door, an LPG fired radiant heating supply and three IP65 400 watt floodlights above the hangar door.
Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport is an ideal location for aircraft testing and training, search and rescue, aircraft manufacture or assembly, maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft, military and civilian activity, business aviation and education, including flight training. Aerohub offers aviation and aerospace companies a unique operating environment. It is England's only aerospace focused Enterprise Zone, with significant access to development land and investment.
Rubb will be showcasing its work at Aerohub and other aviation building projects at Farnborough International Airshow, Aerospace in Cornwall stand (Hall 1, Stand C9) from July 14th to July 18th 2014.
