Hazardous Waste The Law Has Changed ......
18-05-2016
If you need to dispose of batteries, chemicals, oils etc you must comply with the hazardous waste legislation the rules of which changed in April 2016
What is hazardous waste?
The types of waste we are referring to are materials and substances regarded as particularly harmful to humans or the environment if not properly managed. These wastes may include asbestos, chemicals, pesticides, solvents, batteries, oils (except edible oils), and equipment containing ozone depleting substances eg fridges.
What has changed?
Before April 2016 businesses which produce hazardous waste were required to register their premises with the Environment Agency. Having done so you received a premises registration number which you used on paperwork each time you send waste off site. There was an exception for those producing very small amounts of waste.
However from April 2016 in England only these rules have changed. It won’t be necessary to register your premises and your premises number will become obsolete.
If you would like an Environmental Policy prepared for your organisation to help you comply with your legal responsibilities for only £149.00* CLICK HERE or on the feet for further information.
Consignment Notes
Removing the need for premises to register, causes a change to the format of the unique consignment note code, which will also apply in England from 1 April 2016.
Businesses will need to amend the first six characters of the consignment note code (currently the premises registration number), replacing them with the first six letters or numbers of the business name. Businesses must ensure consistent use of these six letters or numbers. “Exempt” will no longer be used. The second set of characters will continue to be five numbers or letters of your choosing.
