The cam switch is a multiple purpose switch which is often used. The switch construction is different from the packet switch, resulting in the fact that the characteristics and applications differ. A cam switch has one or more chambers in which one or two contact bridges are being operated by means of the cam which is fixated on the central shaft. By turning the central shaft the cam pushes the contact bridge off from the fixed contact (braking of the electrical contact). By turning the central shaft further the contact bridge is pushed back by the spring which is mounted behind the contact bridge and thus making electrical contact again. This principle enables to build very compact switches. Santon has twelve different series of cam switches varying from small (10A) to big (2000A).
