In combination with the robust Citadel casing, the packet switch is often used as an electrical isolator. Thanks to the fixed connection between the operating knob and the rotating contact, the contact is either made or broken by turning the operating knob. This is different to most switches, such as the cam switch, which uses spring pressure to make/brake electrical contact. A contact made via spring pressure, is, in practice, less reliable. The switch is often supplied as a disconnecting switch in a watertight casing.
