The UNFCCC announced on Friday 7th September that it will issue the 1 Billionth Certified Emission Reduction under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The CER will be issued to a project at a manufacturing plant in India that has switched its fuel source from coal and oil to locally gathered biomass.
As the Designated Operational Entity (DOE) responsible for the verification of the project concerned, SGS is proud to have contributed to this significant achievement. SGS has been committed to the CDM since the earliest days of the Mechanism and has been responsible for verifying over 350 projects. Along with the CDM itself, we have come a long way from the first issuance of a SGS-verified project in Oct 2005 and we are pleased to reaffirm our commitment both to working within the CDM and promoting further improvement in its oversight and management.
Jonathan Hall, Global Head Climate Change Programme of SGS said “SGS’s global team of verifiers around the world have all played their role in reaching this important milestone and we are proud of their professionalism and dedication. Without DOEs like SGS, no project would ever reach the stage of issuance. CDM projects are making a real difference in the global response to climate change and SGS will continue to fulfil its role in ensuring that these projects meet the strict requirements and criteria of the CDM”.
