This move towards collection, transmission and, often, processing of data on devices other than host servers and computers has become known as “the Internet of Things” or “IoT.” Initially, this technology was used for simple jobs such as light and heat sensors or use in security situations, for example in the home or office, but as it’s become more widespread, engineers want to do more with it, and they are pushing for more performance. There are now a whole host of industries where the Internet of Things has evolved, and products become an essential part of a joined-up ecosystem, driving innovation and allowing for more data collection and far more accurate measurement. Among these are health care monitoring, industrial control, transportation, smart meter reading, building automation, data logging, agricultural monitoring and the list is growing.
