Technical Absorbents is delighted to have joined as a signatory on the M&S Pants to The Tax campaign – their bid to get VAT removed from washable/reusable period pants. In 2021, the Government removed VAT (or what is often referred to as the ‘Tampon Tax’) from products such as tampons and pads. However, a 20% VAT applies to period pants – a reusable period product – because the Government classifies them as a garment. M&S now wants to level the playing field and make reusable period products more cost effective and accessible to more people. So, they are writing to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury asking her to reclassify period pants as a period product.
“At Technical Absorbents, we manufacture a wide range of washable fabrics that can be used as the absorbent core in such reusable period pants/pads,” explains Product Development Director John Rose. “Supporting this campaign will hopefully widen the market for these products – that are sometimes used in tandem with disposables – and make them more affordable. Whatever period product someone chooses to use, we agree with this campaign that they should always be VAT free.”
