Renoir Vintage Copper Belt
This fabulous swirl design belt is typical of the designs for which Renoir is famous. The solid copper band belt is clasped by a chunky copper chain joining the two ends of the belt across the front and signed on the inside back plate with © Renoir and a S for small size. This sleek modernist design would be a great wardrobe accessory for the vintage clothing enthusiast, or for anyone with an eye for uniqueness.
Good vintage condition.
Renoir of California was founded in 1946 by Jerry Fels, specialising in solid copper jewellery. While the earlier Arts & Crafts movement was an inspiration to many of the designs, most of the pieces show characteristics of the geometric and abstact designs of the mid 20th century. In 1952 Fels also founded a subsidiary company called Matisse Ltd, which took the copper jewellery a stage further by adding colourful enamal decoration with designs based on natural objects such as leaves. Sadly, both companies ceased trading in 1962, but left behind two distinctly recognisable forms of costume jewellery.
