Modular Ramp System Installation
30-09-2016
Why should I choose a modular ramp system?
Modular ramps are quite versatile in its composition, they are solid and strong and once in place can last for years. So yes, it is definitely worth it to have a look at modular systems.
However, modular wheelchair access systems can be challenging and can become quite a science when you have a first look at them.
So, where to start?
The first question that come to mind are probably: How should I know which length, width, handrail, platform etc. I need?
The answer is not too hard to find than you might think in the first place. As soon as you know where to look and which measurements you need it is getting much simpler.
We have a guide and video on the website, which measurements in the door are important and how to take them, have a look here.
Next thing you need to know, how long does the ramp need to be? Well, we would usually recommend a safety gradient from 1:12 for modular systems. If you take for example the height of 1ft you need a 12ft long ramp. That is a very smooth gradient and can be easily used by wheelchair users without additional help.
Now you have the door measurements and the length needed so we can have a proper look at the cosmetics. As a modular system will be in place for a while, you want to make sure it fits, looks good and doesn’t use any of the space that you might need for something else.
Therefore you need to have a look at how that 12ft long ramp will fit on your property. For that you have several options. So let’s start from the top.
Do you want a platform?
We generally recommend that you have a platform. From a wheelchair user or general user point of view, a platform is quite important. Imagine you want to leave the house and need to close the door. For this example only it is already much more comfortable for the wheelchair user to have a platform. As you will land on a platform, you can turn and move on the platform, do what needs to be done, easily close/lock the door and then in your own pace access the ramp.
A platform can also easily be fitted on and around steps as the legs are adjustable and fit on nearly every surface. So if you have a few steps, place the platform on top of it and from the platform you need to figure out in which direction the ramp can go and where do you have space. If you don’t have space for a 12ft long ramp, you can add two platform on your ramp and make a U-Turn on the ramp, for example. Or you just make a 90 degree angled turn, for a L-shape kind of ramp.
The possibilities are near endless and the modular system fully customisable for your need.
Where are we now? At this stage you have the measurements, the length, you know if you want a platform (or more).
Now you have several options for handrails.
Maybe you want a certain colour? Double height handrails or better balustrade handrails? Balustrade handrails are good if you have kids for example and they are not supposed to climb on the ramp or fall of it.
Again, we can nearly do anything.
While you were reading this blog you might have thought about Building regulations and permissions. I can tell you that this ramp is easily be disassembled in a few moments and therefore can be seen as a temporary solution. In this case, you don’t need a permission and you don’t need to comply with any building regulations.
Naturally you want to think about the installation, before you order a ramp. I can assure you every modular ramp can be assembled by every competent builder and confident DIY’er.
Our system is manufactured in Sweden, and similar to another furniture company from Sweden, the system can easily be built by two people in a sunny afternoon, or any other afternoon.
We supply the ramps with fully building instructions. New: We have also produced a video as guideline to the installation of your system which can be found at the bottom of the blog. When you have build one, you can build them all.
In the worst case we can provide also technical support on the telephone.
Still worried you might not be able to order the right system? No worries, our friendly technical advisor team is happy to help. Just get in touch with us.
How versatile the modular systems can be, can be seen on the images below or a selection can also be found in our modular section on the website.
