All systems go at Waterloo Station
30-08-2017
Stannah is pleased to announce a contract award to supply six escalators and five lifts, to Network Rail specifications, into the upgrade programme at London Waterloo station and are now on site ready to meet a demanding seven week deadline for delivery of the lifts/escalator package.
The Stannah project team will be completing the work for Network Rail and main contractor Wessex Alliance/Skanska.
The timeframe has been highly accelerated to assist the whole project, with delays squeezing the lift and escalator install programme.
The vision to rebuild the former London Waterloo International Terminal area will; extend the scope of the station; improve and grow a spacious, modern and fully accessible concourse; bring platforms 20-24 back into permanent use and allow longer 10-carriage trains to run to London suburban stations by extending platforms 1 -4.
This area of the station sits beneath a glass roof which, together with the heat generated by the trains themselves, creates thermal expansion/contraction, so equipment needed modification. A special bespoke bearing design/installation on the upper mounting of each escalator will allow for the building to move up to 150mm in horizontal plain beneath the escalator.
The new part of the station will be connected to the main station via a brand new bridge and concourse area, currently under construction. The work forms part of the huge £800 million investment to boost capacity at Waterloo by 30% by December 2018.
