In need of a high quality, durable saw for the best price they could find, a faculty at the University of the West of England in Bristol chose a three-year-old Striebig vertical panel machine.
The saw, supplied last December, is used in the design workshops within the Faculty of the Environment and Technology (FET) where it sizes thin sheet ply and MDF sheet material, up to 16mm thick.
Said Nick Tidman, the faculty’s technical manager, laboratories and workshops: “We previously had a circular saw but it took up too much workshop space when we recently relocated our design model making workshops, so we decided to purchase a vertical panel saw.”
“Our specialist technical staff in the design workshops recommended that we considered a Striebig as according to them they were ‘industry standard professional machines’. We found the supplier, T.M. Machinery through a web search for ‘panel saws’ and luckily found out that had a suitable second hand model in stock.” They were happy to buy the Compact 4164 model, the smallest of the nine models in the entry-level range, because as well as limited workshop space they had no need for a bigger machine.
“Our technicians who use the saw like its very robust construction and the smoothness of operation, both of the saw unit and the vertical and horizontal axis of movement,” said Nick Tidman “It has made cutting sheet material much easier, much more accurate and quicker. With all the added benefits it is delivering we would be lost without it.”
The Compact 4164 has a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm. It guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3, which is greatly appreciated by the staff in the FET.
All Compact saws are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels.
“We were very happy with T.M’s attention to detail over the initial sales call plus the follow-up pre-delivery, delivery and installation service, and would happily recommend them to other would-be purchasers,” said Mr Tidman.
T.M. Machinery only supplies second-hand Striebig machines that they are sure will give many more years of reliable service.
“They all undergo a comprehensive refurbishment with older machine being completely stripped down so that all bearings and other parts subject to wear can be replaced,” said director Matt Pearce. “Our confidence in our refurbished machinery is backed up by a six-month parts and labour warranty.”
