The Uses for the Different Types of Access Equipment

There are many tasks across a range of industries that require work to be carried out at height. With that said, that doesn’t mean all of these require full-scale scaffolding, yet access equipment is still required.

In this blog, we’ll look at the different types of access equipment for different heights and some examples of what these may be used for.

Hop Ups

Starting at the smallest level, a hop up is a small, usually foldable platform that is used for low level access work. They are commonly used by plasterers and decorators for reaching those awkward spaces at the top of walls and ceilings, allowing them to carry out their job more efficiently and conveniently.

Podium Steps

Next up from hop ups are podium steps. As their name suggests, podium steps feature a small platform, or podium, at the top of a number of steps. They are still relatively small, often reaching around a metre high, although some can go up to two metres. They also feature railing around the podium for additional safety.

These are very common to see being used in warehouses or in storerooms, as they are lightweight (being made from aluminium) and easy to move around, yet still sturdy and ideal for accessing items stored at height.

Ladders

There are many types of ladders available; from combination ladders to extension ladders, they can be used for a wide range of applications. Ladders are ideal for undertaking certain tasks at height, such as window cleaning or gutter clearing (ideally by professionals) that can be done from the ladder itself, or for simply accessing high areas, such as for roofers accessing roofs.

Scaffold Towers

Finally, we have scaffold towers. These are small-scale forms of scaffolding that can be used both indoors and outdoors. They offer the height accessibility of ladders (sometimes to an even greater degree) with the safety of scaffolding thanks to a working platform to stand on and surrounding railings to help prevent accidental falls.

Scaffold towers can be used for a large range of applications, from use in construction to use in the entertainment industry.
