Owner Ian Dunn, had long sought ways the hotel could reduce it's energy consumption in the face of a prolonged period of price increases. “We are always looking for ways of reducing energy costs. Heating is naturally a major component of that. But cost reductions must never be allowed to compromise our residents comfort, both in terms of heating and continuous hot water availability” said Ian. Ian contacted Total Energy Controls, who arranged a free survey of the hotel’s heating systems and prepared a report with recommendations for installation of their Intelligent Energy Management Controls. TEC’s controls are designed to automatically adjust the firing of the boiler plant to meet the varying demands placed upon it, ensuring that heating is provided as required at all times, whilst allowing for changes in outside temperature. “TEC installed their systems in October 2010, and during the period November ’10 to February ‘11 we recorded a reduction in overall gas consumption compared to the same period during previous years of 20%” said Ian. “This reduction is all the more impressive as we obviously use a large amount of gas for cooking and hot water and these are separate to the boilers. Importantly we have experienced no adverse effects on our residents comfort.” A key benefit of installing TEC controls was the reduction of the hotel’s greenhouse gas emissions, helping reduce its Carbon Footprint. Ian Dunn was impressed. “Reducing gas consumption by over 20% means we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by a similar amount. This supports the overall policy of the hotel to reduce its carbon footprint in all areas”. The Hotel was able to fund the TEC installation through an interest free loan available from the Carbon Trust, the organisation set up by DEFRA to support businesses and organisations in reducing their Carbon Footprint. “The application process was quick and straightforward and all the paperwork was submitted by TEC on our behalf” said Ian. “Even had we opted not to apply for the Carbon Trusts interest free loan the high level of savings achieved mean that paybacks on capital purchase would have been acceptable ” Ian added. In summary, the Calcot Hotel is very pleased with the performance of TEC’s Intelligent Energy Management Controls as they continue to play a part in cost reduction and supporting the hotel's green agenda. Ian Dunn, concluded: “TEC’s Engineers installed and commissioned their systems quickly, with no disruption to the hotels activities.
