Lighting columns are susceptible to corrosion at the base, due to splashes and ground water, and the collar (swage joint) often due to condensation built up inside the column. Regular inspection of lighting columns is recommended to ensure they are maintained in good condition and are structurally safe to prevent the column from collapsing and causing possible injury. Local governments and authorities are usually required to carry out thickness measurements on a regular basis along local roads and highway networks. Measurements are typically taken at four points around the circumference at different heights on the lighting column.
